DoubleFeature App Update
Today we release DoubleFeature 1.2 for the iPad! This new version adds a bunch of frequently requested features, including:
- The option to be notified when new issues are released!
- Faster page flipping when tapping in the margins.
- More obvious “go back to the title screen” button. It’s now called “Done” and is on the left side of the toolbar.
We’ve also included a fun new feature: each story now has a selection of hi-res art perfectly sized to fit the lock- or home-screen of your iPad! Just click the “picture” button on the toolbar to see a list of images you can save to your photo library to use as wallpaper.
Excellent Communities and “The Daily”
Marcus Zarra, a developer of “The Daily”, has written a blog post decrying what he perceives as “a disturbing trend” of negativity in the developer community since The Daily’s release.
As an iOS developer and one of the bloggers who criticized “The Daily” upon its release I feel compelled to say a few words on this.
Why The Daily is an Abomination
(and how to fix it)
I am not a blogger. I’m just a UI designer and iOS developer. I don’t usually write about this stuff and don’t really have a stump from which to speak.
But the normal outlets I frequent for criticism on these matters are either silent or effusive about the $30mil train wreck that is The Daily. So this time I’ll play the critic. (UPDATE: John Gruber’s since delivered some spot-on analysis of the loading problem)
Train Wreck? Isn’t that a little harsh? I say no. For a media outlet designed from the ground up to be an iPad app, The Daily fails in almost every way to be iPad-like. There are lots of little misses and miscues in the design, but most of them contribute to breaking the same cardinal rule: “Your app shall be responsive.”
